Why AI Keeps Recommending Businesses From Reddit

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI for the best business near you, and a surprising amount of the time the answer traces back to Reddit. Here's why AI leans on Reddit so hard, why the shortcuts people use to fake it backfire, and how an honest business actually earns those mentions.

The short version

When an AI assistant recommends a business, it isn't guessing. It pulls from sources it trusts and stitches an answer together, and one of the sources it trusts most is Reddit. On Perplexity, Reddit is close to half of the top cited sources. On Google's AI Overviews it's the single biggest social source. That's why "what does Reddit say" has quietly become part of "what does the AI say." The catch: you can't fake your way onto Reddit, and the businesses that try usually make things worse. The real path is slower, and it works.

How much AI actually leans on Reddit

The numbers surprise most business owners:

  • Perplexity: Reddit makes up roughly 46% of its top citations, close to twice Wikipedia, and about a quarter of everything it cites.
  • Google AI Overviews: Reddit is the leading social source, around 44% of the social citations in AI answers.
  • ChatGPT: lighter on Reddit at roughly 11%, but it still shows up, and ChatGPT cross-checks what it reads there against everything else.

Put simply: a real conversation on Reddit where someone vouches for a cleaner, a roofer, or a plumber can outweigh that business's own polished website in the eyes of the AI.

Why AI trusts Reddit more than your website

Two reasons. First, it's real people. A thread where actual customers argue about who's good and who burned them is exactly the kind of honest, hard-to-fake signal an AI wants when it's deciding who to recommend. Your website says you're the best. Reddit is where the AI checks whether anyone agrees.

Second, Reddit is walled off. Google and OpenAI pay Reddit for direct access to its data, and Reddit blocks nearly everyone else from scraping it. That means the content is hard to get and hard to manufacture, and that difficulty is the whole point. The AI leans on Reddit precisely because you can't buy or automate your way in. The only thing that works is genuine participation that's built up over time, which is also the reason most of your competitors will never do it.

The shortcut that backfires

Once people learn AI favors Reddit, the temptation is obvious: cram the word "Reddit" into a page, spin up a few fresh accounts, and post links to your own business across a dozen subreddits. We don't do this, and you shouldn't let anyone do it for you. Here's why it fails:

  • Reddit is built to catch it. New accounts are throttled and heavily filtered. A single removed post can sink a fresh account, and posting the same thing across many subs is a classic ban trigger. One marketer got banned in fourteen communities for exactly that.
  • Promo language trips the wire. Phrases like "check out" and "just launched" in the first couple of sentences get auto-removed by moderators before a human ever sees them.
  • Shadowbans are silent. The worst outcome isn't a visible ban. It's that your posts quietly stop showing to anyone while you keep talking to an empty room, and none of it ever reaches the AI.

Stuffing "Reddit" into your metadata is the same idea in a smaller costume: a cheap trick that treats the AI like it can't tell the difference between a real endorsement and a keyword. It can, and that gap is closing fast.

How to earn Reddit mentions the real way

The honest version is straightforward, if not fast. It looks like being a genuinely useful member of the communities where your customers already talk:

  • Answer the question first. Lead with a real solution, a hard-won lesson, or actual numbers from running your business. Mention your own company only when it truly fits the question, and say plainly that it's yours.
  • Be a regular, not a billboard. The rule of thumb is to be helpful nine times for every one time you promote anything. Real operating experience, honestly shared, is what gets upvoted, and upvoted is what the AI reads.
  • Say the same true things everywhere. When your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and a genuine Reddit thread all line up on who you are and what you do, the AI treats it as verified. That agreement across sources is what turns a mention into a recommendation.

None of this is a growth hack. It's showing up as a real business in the places real customers compare notes, which is the same reason it holds up when the AI checks.

Where this fits

Reddit is one piece of a bigger picture. AI also leans hard on video, reviews, and a clean, consistent presence across the open web. Getting all of it pointing the same direction, so the AI can find you, trust you, and name you, is a discipline called GEO (generative engine optimization), also known as AEO (answer engine optimization). Our complete guide to GEO walks through the whole system, and where AI gets its recommendations covers the other sources it trusts.

See where you stand

We run a free AI-visibility audit: we ask the AI the exact questions your customers ask, show you who it recommends today, and pinpoint why. Most owners are surprised to see a competitor named, sometimes on the strength of a single Reddit thread, while they're missing entirely. The gap is almost always fixable.
