Where AI Actually Gets Its Recommendations
When someone asks ChatGPT or Google's AI for the best business near them, the AI pulls from a surprisingly small set of trusted sources. Here's what the 2026 data shows about which sources those are, and why most local businesses are invisible to all of them.

The short version
AI assistants don't invent recommendations. They pull from sources they trust, stitch an answer together, and cite a handful of them. If your business isn't in those sources, you're not in the answer. The good news: the data on which sources AI trusts is now clear enough to actually act on.
Search and AI have split apart
For years, ranking on Google's first page was the goal. That's no longer enough. The overlap between Google's top-10 organic results and what AI assistants actually cite has collapsed, from roughly 75% in mid-2025 to somewhere between 17% and 38% in early 2026. In plain terms: you can rank on Google and still be invisible to ChatGPT. Winning AI recommendations is now its own discipline.
Where the AI actually looks
Three kinds of sources dominate AI answers in 2026, and they're not what most business owners expect:
- Community discussion. On Perplexity, Reddit accounts for close to half of all cited sources, nearly twice Wikipedia. On Google's AI Overviews it's the single biggest social source. AI leans on real human conversation to decide who's actually good.
- Video. In 2026 YouTube overtook Reddit as the most-cited social source in AI answers. In large-scale analysis, the number of times a brand was mentioned on YouTube turned out to be the single strongest predictor of AI visibility, ahead of backlinks and domain authority.
- Corroborated facts across the open web. AI cross-checks claims. When your website, your listings, your reviews, and third-party mentions all state the same facts, the AI treats them as verified, and verified businesses are the ones that get recommended.
Why most local businesses are invisible to AI
It's rarely the quality of the business. It's that nothing is telling the AI they exist and are trusted: a site the AI can't cleanly read, a thin or missing Google Business Profile, reviews sitting on platforms the AI doesn't weigh, and no presence in the community and video sources the AI actually pulls from. The recommendation goes to whoever the AI can see, not necessarily whoever is best.
What actually moves the needle
The research is consistent: AI favors content that's clearly structured, concrete, and backed by specifics, and it favors businesses whose facts are corroborated in multiple trusted places. Original detail and real specifics measurably raise how often a source gets cited. There's no trick to it. It's being genuinely findable and genuinely trusted, in the specific places the AI reads. That discipline is called GEO (generative engine optimization), also known as AEO (answer engine optimization), and it's exactly what our complete guide to GEO walks through.

We run a free AI-visibility audit: we ask the AI the exact questions your customers ask, show you who it recommends today, and pinpoint why. Most owners are surprised to see competitors named and themselves missing. The gap is almost always fixable.
